About Dr. Sarika Shah-Sekhon

Dr. Sarika Shah-Sekhon is a hospitalist and nocturnist specializing in primary care and internal medicine. As a hospitalist, Dr. Shah- Sekhon is responsible for patient care assessments and admissions for medical, mental health and intensive care units. She ensures that diagnosis and treatment are addressed promptly while coordinating care across numerous specialists. This leads to better patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays, and more effective communication among the various healthcare providers involved in a patient’s care.

Dr. Sekhon has served the rural communities of upstate New York in Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Plattsburg, and Massena for the past 16 years. She is passionate about her work and providing patient care, with a focus on primary care outpatient medication and inpatient

Sarika Shah-Sekhon’s Professional Career

Dr. Shah-Sekhon currently practices at several healthcare facilities. She is an Outpatient Internal Medicine Clinician with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in Potsdam, a Nocturnist Internal Medicine at Rochester Regional Health in Massena and in Ogdensburg

NY with North Star Health Alliance, and a Clinical Supervisor for Advanced Practice Providers at Statline Medical Services. She also provides inpatient medical and telehealth services thru Sekhon Allied Health.

Her previous positions included internal medicine clinician, advanced care provider supervisor, and outpatient internal medicine clinician, and she was employed at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center- CHMC. She also currently serves as the Medical Director for Massena Rehabilitation Center and the Plattsburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Additionally, Dr. Sarika Shah-Sekhon was one of the founders of Sarika Diversified, LLC, a medical data processing and billing company founded in Montreal, Canada.

Medical Research Experience

Dr. Shah-Sekhon has an impressive background in medical research. She collaborated on Immunogenetics, Immunosuppression, Xenotransplantation, and Ethics research at the Harvard University School of Medicine Immunobiology Research Center at Beth Israel DeaconessCenter, Department of Surgery in Boston, Massachusetts. She was also involved in research with Dr. H Deihl from Loma Linda University with the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP), which is a lifestyle intervention program that helps improve coronary health.

As part of a summer research fellowship program at the University of Guelph, Dr. Shah-Sekhon was a Research Technician in the field of Chromosomal Control and Development for the Department of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics in Guelph, Canada.

A Member of Several Professional Organizations

Dr. Sarika Shah-Sekhon is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), American College of Physicians (ACP), Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), Diabetic Medical Association, and the Ontario Medical Association (OMA), Licenses/Certifications

She holds her New York State and Connecticut licenses, has her DEA X Registration, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and ACLS/BLS. She completed Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) training.

Serving on Several Hospital Committees at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center

Sarika Shah-Sekhon has served on several hospital committees at CHMC, including the Liaison Recruitment and Retention Committee from 2010 to 2018. She was also a member of the Ethics Committee from 2016 to 2018, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee from

2014 to 2015, and the CME Committee from 2019 to 2021.

Education and Medical Residencies

Dr. Shah-Sekhon graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physiology with honors from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She was an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in physiology and anatomy cell biology at McGill University.

She received her Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Dr. Shah-Sekhon did her Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Medical Residency at Norwalk Hospital, which is affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Philanthropic Work

Dr. Sekhon has volunteered and been involved with several nonprofits during the last 20-plus years. Participated in various fundraisers for regional cancer associations, promoting physical activity while reducing the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. For example, the Walk with a Doc Program encourages physical activity and reduces the impact of a sedentary lifestyle. Walk with a Doc offers free walking programs led by local doctors, healthcare providers, or medical students in communities worldwide.

She’s been involved with the St. Lawrence County Office of the Aging Upstate New York for nine years. The organization provides services and advocacy for county residents 60 years and older. Its programs and services include nutrition centers, home-delivered

meals, home care services, family caregiver support, medical transportation, legal services, health insurance information counseling and assistance, health promotion classes, computer classes, and nutrition education and counseling.

Dr. Sekhon also volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club in Brockville, Ontario, and supports Child Haven International, whose mission is to assist children and women in developing countries, including India, Nepal, and Tibet, who need food, education, healthcare, shelter, clothing, as well as emotional and moral support. In addition, she donates to the St. Lawrence Cancer Fund, Jules for Life Foundation, which provides financial assistance to families battling pediatric cancer in St. Lawrence County. She is a firm believer in philanthropy and has encouraged her own children to immerse themselves similarly – founding The Handprint Project, which holds fundraisers to empower young minds to thrive and give all children an equal opportunity.

Dr. Sekhon was born in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, in 1977
